Musk

Musk is one of the oldest bases in the fragrance world. This popular and versatile note has the ability to refine, balance and accentuate the notes that it is partnered with without making the perfume feel too heavy.

Natural musk is sourced from the male musk deer. In 1979, the musk deer was declared a protected species and perfumers looked to other sources for musky aromas. Natural compounds including ambrette, seed oil, galbanum oil and angelica root oils also have a musk scent.

During the 80s, due to the endangered status of the musk deer, perfumers turned to engineering synthetic musk’s and this is what is commonly used in musk based fragrances today.

Often musk notes are used to balance citrus notes. Baby Doll by Yves Saint Laurent is an example of when musk is used with a sparkling citrus blend to maintain fruity freshness but also give depth and warmth. The immensely popular J.Lo Glow is another fragrance that employs the beauty of musk.
